AFI nominations highlight a bumper year for WA productions
The nominations for the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards were announced yesterday with a record number of Western Australian productions showing the continuing strength in the industry and its home grown talent.
ScreenWest Chief Executive Ian Booth said: "This year has been a fantastic year for the Western Australian screen industry, with the AFI nominations confirming what broadcasters and audiences around the world had already realised. WA makes high quality productions."
"The nominations were across a wide range of categories, which shows the diversity of talent in WA."
In 2008-09, ScreenWest's investment of $5.33million helped achieve a record year of production valued at an estimated $42.15million. The total hours of production were also a record - 72.5 hours up from 55 hours the previous year.
3 Acts of Murder, produced by Taylor Media has been nominated for four AFI awards:
- ‘Best Telefeature, Mini Series or Short Run Series'
- ‘Best Lead Actor in Television Drama' for Robert Menzies
- ‘Best Guest or Supporting Actor in Television Drama' for Bille Brown
- ‘Best Guest or Supporting Actress in a Television Drama' for Anni Finsterer
Taylor Media also received a nomination for Time Trackers in ‘Best Children's Television Drama'.
Documentary Death of the Megabeasts (Prospero Productions) visual effects team, Matt Drummond and Mike Dunn are nominated for the ‘Visual Effects Award'.
Cracking the Colour Code (Episode 2, Making Colours) editor Lawrie Silvestrin was nominated for ‘Best Editing in a Documentary', with cinematographers Ian Batt and Vincent Fooy nominated in the ‘Best Cinematography in a Documentary'. Cracking the Colour Code is produced by Electric Pictures.
Also nominated for ‘Best Cinematography in a Documentary' is My Asian Heart director David Bradbury (produced by CM Films and Frontline Films).
Water, produced by The Everywhen is nominated for ‘Best Short Fiction Film' for Sarah Saw and Corrie Jones and ‘Best Screenplay in a Short Film' for Corrie Jones, Sarah Shaw and Ian Meadows.
Herbert Pinter was nominated in the 'AFI Award for Best Production Design' for his work on Mao's Last Dancer .
Feature film Australia has been nominated for six AFI awards. Included in these nominations is "Best Supporting Actor' for Broome actor Brandon Walters.
Documentary series First Australians was nominated for two AFIs: ‘Best Documentary Series' and ‘Best Direction in a Documentary'. ScreenWest provided funding support to Episode 5 ‘An Unhealthy Government Experiment' Western Australia (1897 - 1937).
Death of a Megabeasts, 3 Arts of Murder, My Asian Heart, Cracking the Colour Code, Water, First Australians and Australia are all proudly supported by ScreenWest and Lotterywest.
