Jules Duncan wins FTI’s State Pitching competition
02 October 2012
Congratulations to Jules Duncan who was announced as the winner of the WA State Pitching Competition at the Film & Television Institute (FTI) last Thursday, 27 September 2012. Jules will now head to SPAA Fringe and the Cockatoo Island Film Festival on 26 October with the support of ScreenWest to represent WA with his proposed film, Bogan Wedding. The feature length comedy, Bogan Wedding, tells the tale of a snobby anthropologist who is forced to return to her roots to help organise her bogan sister's wedding. With stretched Hummers, fake tans, a hen's night and a $20,000 dress "like the one what Princess Kate wore", our heroine attempts to make the best of a bad situation by conducting her own studies into this fascinating modern tribe.
This new project follows on from Jule's 2009 short documentary, Cashed Up Bogans.
Funded through Screen Australia, ScreenWest and FTI's Raw Nerve initiative, Cashed Up Bogans was shortlisted for 2010 Tropfest, won Best Film at the 2010 Rottnest Film and Comedy Festival, Best Editing at the Currambin Film Festival and screened at CinéfestOZ.
FTI CEO, Paul Bodlovich said Jule's pitch represented WA's best chance yet for a WA finalist to win the national competition and the ultimate prize of a trip to the Cannes Film Market with $1,500 cash.
"With a record number of applications and no less than seven former WA Screen Award nominee's among the twelve finalists, it was intensely competitive event and difficult for the judges to decide on just one winner. However at the end of the day, Jules' thoroughly absorbing pitch and hilarious slide show presentation stood out above the others. FTI congratulates all the finalists on their excellent pitches and we wish Jules the best of luck as he takes on the other five State finalists at the semi-finals in October", said Paul.
If Jules is among the three semi-finalists selected at this competition, he will be then flown to the SPAA Conference National Competition finals, where he will have the opportunity to pitch in front of 700+ Industry delegates.
The overall winner will receive a return airfare to the Cannes Film Festival or a TV market of their choice in 2013 plus a $1,500 cash prize and one full conference registration to the 2013 SPAA Conference.
ScreenWest would like to wish Jules the best of luck for the next stage of the competition.
